book club banner 1024x768 book club: knit and purl stitches 250 to knit

It has been a while since I did my last book review/recommendation and I’m not really sure why as I still read, buy and borrow plenty of fashion related books. Lately, I have really wanted to develop my knitting skills before I return to University. I’ll not pretend I found basic knitting easy; my first attempts were disasterous! My only advice is to just keep practicing with different yarns and needle types to find what works best for you.

If once you have mastered basic knit and purl knitting you want to enhance your projects with fancy looking stitches, I highly recommend the book ‘Knit and Purl Stitches 250 to knit‘ edited by Erika Knight. This book is great for anyone who just wants to know how to create intricate looking stitches in their work and are not looking for actual knitting projects and patterns. Each pages contains a different stitch with a clear photograph of the how the knit should look along with consise instructions. There is a glossary at the back of the book incase, like me, you are new to knitting and aren’t sure of the exact termnology.

You can purchase the book here, or why not see if your library has a copy. A good idea may be to photocopy any interesting stitches along with the instructions for future reference!

P.S sorry to any design students at Huddersfield University who are after borrowing this book – I have had it for about 6 months now but will be returning it in September!

1000 artist journal pages

cover 150x150 1000 artist journal pages

I love books! Especially books that inspire me creatively. Over the past couple of years I have developed quite a collection and am just dying to share them with you. The first book that I have chosen to blog about is ‘1000 artist journal pages’ by Dawn DeVries Sokol. This book is a personal favourite of mine as it is filled with a great compilation of inspiring photographs (1000 to be precise…!) and very little text; the imagery quite simply does the talking.

The book begins with a selection of views on ‘why journal’, followed by an introduction and two page spread on tips for getting started on your own sketchbook. The rest of the book is simply filled with stimulating photographs and the artist’s name. The content is raw and personal. Looking through a person’s sketchbook to me is like wondering through their thoughts. I wish I could share every page with you but will have to settle for a few of my favourites… enjoy!
